Royal Navy Type 182*
Final Amplifier and Power Unit
| Description:
*The Royal Navy Type 182 was a torpedo decoy system, which has now been removed from service. These units are the high power output amplifier stage and matching power unit. Operating frequency is in the range 20-50KHz, and output power up to 2KW pulsed. The amplifier employs a pair of QY4-250 type tubes in push-pull configuration. The amplifier chassis also houses the EHT smoothing components, filament transformer, and input/output transformers. The power supply unit consists of an EHT transformer, a full-wave solid state EHT rectifier, and other auxiliary components. Specifications (summary): Amplifier:
Power Unit:
Note: while designed for 115V operation, it would be possible to reconfigure the transformer taps for other mains voltages. A circuit diagram of these units is available. |

Applications |
|
|
The original application is highly specific, but these amplifiers would be suitable for a variety of other applications. The following list is intended to give a few ideas, though other possibilities will undoubtedly exist.
|
With modification, these amplifiers could form the basis of a high power RF amplifier for frequencies up to 75MHz, or beyond. For the High Voltage & High Energy experimenter, these units contain many useful parts. See photographs and descriptions of the components used in these units. Once stripped, these components may be re-used for a wide variety of applications, e.g:
|
| Buyer beware: These units utilise lethal voltages and
store a large amount of energy. Misused, they represent an serious
hazard to persons and property.
Contact with the high voltage components will result in serious injury or death. |
