High Power Linac Electromagnet and Brown 400A Power Supply |
This is a HUGE electromagnet which was built for a linear accelerator. The core has a cross-section of 100mm x 65mm, and is 270mm long. The copper coil is wound from hollow square-section wire 7mm x 7mm, and the complete assembly weighs in at 30Kg. In the original application, this magnet was operated at 350A. The coils, pole pieces and core may be easily separated. It would be relatively simple to modify the pole pieces, or to fit now ones of a different size/shape.
We are supplying this magnet with a Brown Applied Technology PS70 power supply as used in Cray super-computers. This power supply can deliver up to 400A to the electromagnet. For extended periods of operation, the power unit AND the magnet will require liquid cooling. The magnet coils are fitted with temperature sensing switches.
We do not have any figures for the magnetic flux produced by this item, but we found it was impossible to remove a spanner from the pole pieces while the current was switched on. It is clearly a VERY powerful magnet, and requires a certain level of care in operation.
Both the electromagnet and the power supply are in good condition and tested. Cables are not included. You will require a suitable mains cable for the power supply, and heavy duty cables to connect the electromagnet coils to the power supply, which is fitted with a double-sided "spade" style output connector. A little "DIY" will be necessary.
Uses? Not too sure! But a VERY interesting item.
