This unit is a TWT (Traveling Wave Tube) amplifier unit manufactured by Thorn EMI Electronics, originally for an EW system.
Providing a minimum output power of 1000W (Pulsed), and a maximum output up to ~2kW from 7.5-16GHz (300W minimum from 16.5-17GHz), and over 80dB of gain, this amplifier is useful in a variety of commercial and hobbyist applications. The following are a few of the possibilities:
EMC testing
Materials testing
Component testing
Amateur (including EME)
This amplifier provides a pulsed RF output. Pulses are externally triggered up to a maximum rate of 7kHz by a TTL or 5V CMOS compatible signal. The RF pulse begins within 0.5uS of the trigger pulse, and the pulse width is approximately 5.5uS (internally limited). RF pulses may be externally gated to a shorter duration, but may never be longer than this internally defined limit.
The cosmetic condition of this unit is excellent. It is self-contained and simple to operate. We will supply the unit with a 2m mains cable and standard 1/2" hose connections. An external power isolation switch is strongly recommended, as the unit is not fitted with one. Cooling requirements are modest, enquire for details. We have a large stock of WRD750 waveguide and other components including bends, couplers, switches, horns, transitions, rotary joints and terminations.
